Fourteen
inset bas-relief images of the Crucifixion of Christ adorn the perimeter of the
church interior. Christians move through the Stations, stopping to contemplate
each image and say selected prayers. These Stations were produced by JosephSibbel
Studios of New York, which continued Sibbel’s work in ecclesiastical
sculpture for several decades after his death in 1907. The date of this
set of Stations is ca.1920. Sibbel is known for his colossal statue of
Archbishop Feehan of Chicago and the statues of St. Patrick., St. Anselm,
St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Alphonsus Liguori, and St. Bonaventure in
St.Patrick's Cathedral, New York.
Delma Tallerico assisted with identifying the date of the Stations. She is an expert on Joseph Sibbel's work. See her website for more information.
